I know historically the shetland was a hard working pony but how would mules out of a shetland and ~48" jack compare (size to strength ratio) to mules produced out of belgian mares and standard of mamoth jacks? also, I think I remember reading something that said the gene for paint in horses and ponies is not the same as the gene for spotting in donks, dose my memory serve me right?

Can't help with the ratio thing.

With the spot gene being different, I am not surprised. Donkey/a$$ family
are totally different species than horses!!

Of COURSE they would have their genes in a different location on the string.
Seems like they don't even have the same amount of genes, which is why
the mule or hinny is usually sterile when you cross the horse and donkey species.

I would believe that Zebra's also have their stripe gene in a different location
on their gene string, being a third species. They are neither horses or
donkey/a$$ members! Same with Tarpons, equine but not horses. All the species
are Equine, but that is just the baseline to group them with. The Equine
family has gone in a lot of directions, some survived, some became extinct.

The striping from zebra hybrids does tend to bleed though.

Color is just going to depend on the gene dominance.

Those zebra crosses may have some striping, knees, shoulders, hocks, but seldom
have full-body stripes. In the Buckskin/Dun family of colors in horses, you will find
stripes on knees, withers, various places too. They give bonus points to those equines,
in the color Registries, color classes at shows.

With the "non-typical" colors found on mules, pinto, appy, light colors, red/blonde, you
have to believe that the horse side dominated to color the mule up. Some horses, breeds,
are more prepotent than others in producing color. That color will be the winner on foal,
whatever other color animal (horse or donkey) you bred that horse to.

Color is kind of at the bottom of my concerns but, back to my first question is there anyone out there that has seen this breeding at work?

I have two "mini mules", one I believe to be a hinney. They are both right at 49-50". One looks to have been a nicely bred mule either out of a thoroughbred or hackney type pony mare... not "field stock" but nice enough to pull a buggy. The other of mine (the one I believe to be a hinney) is built like a brick $hit house, although she was probably an accident of a pony stud on a jenny.

This is Daisy (though not one of her best photos... and, yes, I did rip into my son about putting a too large rider in a too small saddle on poor Daisy). She is switching her tail here, but it is long and alot more horselike than a mule or donkey and her ears are shorter and wider than any mules I have seen. SHe is 25 or 26, I would have to check.

This is Pete. He came from Amish Missouri and was probably a very nice mule in his day. He is 51.

I'm not sure what your question is, exactly, but from what I have heard a hybrid will outgrow both parents as far as size, so a 12h pony and 12h donkey would likely produce a 13-14h mule.

I was just asking if pound for pound a shetland/ mini mule would be stronger Pound for pound than a belgian/mammoth mule. This is an old post and I don't get on often but would still like to have a team of mini mules someday although after seeing yours I like your hinny better, thanks for the pics!
