I had a nanny goat have one kid last night. After two hours I checked to see if momma was taken him. She didn't seem interested and basically ignored the kid. At about 14 hours I went and checked on them. The kid was in the hay trough, no signs of yellow runny poop and could barely stand. I tried to milk the momma, nothing. She is dry. I got milk replacement and feeding him milk replacer. I have the kid in the house in my dog crate. I have two questions. What is the survival rate without getting colostrium? If I get him colostrium milk from another goat in the next few days will that help or is it too late since he didn't get it within 24 hours? Thanks.

The little guy died this morning. My guess is that at 14 hours before being fed he was probably dehydrated. Any ideas why the momma wasn't producing milk. She had twins in March and had no problems.

Was mom in good health? How old was the doe? Was it her first kidding? Did she have a rough delivery?

I'm following this thread to see what kind of answers you get. We were given a doe in July that had a very rough kidding, didn't make a bag, and rejected the kid. She was in bad shape when we got her. It took us a week of treating with antibiotics, and B vitamins, and probiotics, and worming aggressively to get her back in perky condition. I found out a few months later when talking to her previous owner that they lost a few goats right after we got our doe due to them not worming their herd at proper amounts. When I mentioned how bad of Bailey was when we got her and how much we had to do to get her better the previous owner wondered if that wasn't why she rejected her kid. I've wondered myself if she didn't deliver early since the kids was pretty small and since she wasn't in good health maybe that was why she didn't make milk like she should have. Bailey is now nice and healthy and we have her with a buck. Knowing her kidding history we are going to be keeping a close eye on her when it comes kidding time. If she has the same issues this time kidding she will be sold as a pet only to someone. I'll hate if it comes to that because she has come a long way with us since we got her. She used to run if you just looked at her, now she has become quite friendly with us.

Do you mean that the doe just kidded this past March? And now has given birth the beginning of November? That really isn't a lot of time to recover from her previous pregnancy/nursing.

She kidded 8 months apart. She may have a high worm load. Since she's not pregnant anymore I may give her a high level of dewormer. She bred in June, so the heat of the summer could be a factor here in Texas. There were no problems. I knew she was close, but her udder never tightened up, so it was a little unexpected.

The momma still doesn't seem right after two weeks. She still has some bloody discharge and it will be two weeks tomorrow since she kidded. I took a poop sample to the vet today. Good news, no coccidia. The vet said he did see some worms and some eggs. That's not good since I gave her 6 cc of ivomec orally on Friday, it's been 72 hours. So I got a different kind of dewormer, Safe Guard (Fenbendazole) for Goats. I gave her 3 cc. She is a boer and is probably down to 100-125 pounds. Anyone have any experience with this dewormer? I also gave her some penicillin today. I got Durvet penicillin injectible and gave her 3 cc. Is this the right amount?

Here is a thread from a few months back about some issues I've had with her. http://www.backyardherds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=21089

She still gets the big belly and when you pat on it, it sounds like it is just air.

I plan on giving her another shot of penicillin tomorrow, would really like to for a third day, but I'm leaving for vacation.

When I came back from vacation the girl looked a lot better. The safeguard said to redose in 4 weeks. Two weeks from today I will dose her to what you guys are recommending for worms. Thanks guys!

Safeguard should be dosed at 1cc per 10 lbs. Even though it says it is for goats, the dosage is still the cow dosage. Glad she is doing better though.
