Well I'm not braggin' y'all so don't put me down
But I've got the cutest little coop in town
When foxes come up to it they don't even try
'Cause it's got hardware cloth right up to the sky
She's my little Hoop Coop
You gotta see what I got!

Hat tip (& apologies) to The Beach Boys 😎

Like a good company stock, it's time to split...my flock.

I want to breed my best so that would entail either culling :hitor rehoming those birds that I don't want to breed. I'm going for a third option, separating. And that means another coop.

I built my first hoop coop two years ago, and it has done well in the rain and heat of eastern NC. I don't see any need to stray from what worked, so I am using the original as a template.

My first hoop coop build is posted at BYC, and here's a timeline of links if you're interested:

Last night I marked the approximate location of the new coop, behind the first and out of sight from the road.

Next:

1. Assemble materials needed

2. Site preparation

I will join you on this endeavor. I ordered 75 Cornish Cross chicks, I pick them up February 19. I have nothing big enough to brood them in. Nothing big enough to raise them in. Typical for me.

I’ll have to build it in the front yard (that floods) next to the house so I can run an extension cord to the coop and hang heat lamps. But before that, I must get a load of dirt and build up a place to raise it above the water level in heavy rains. It’s been raining all week of course. I ordered dirt last Friday. Weather has not cooperated. The clock is ticking.

Great!

What about putting the frame up on cement ("cinder") blocks?

Was looking for a photo I remember seeing of a hoop coop up on blocks, and came across the idea of digging a ditch around the perimeter of the hoop coop, and throwing the excavated dirt into the middle to help build it up.

Another thought, goats will tap dance on your hoop coop. A tarp top will get punctured by sharp hooves. Somewhere I have a thread on building a hoop coop with tin top. I’ll go find it. It may be on TEG.

Found it! I used 1x4s on the inside to screw the tin to. A neighbor held them up on the inside while I held up the tin on the outside and screwed it through to the 1x4. Had to use pretty long metal roofing screws, then snugged the tin up tight. That left the ends of the screws bristling out on the inside of the coop, just waiting to snag me. Neighbor cut those ends off flush with boards.

Quote from my journal thread, thank you.

Nice idea. I don't have any tin on hand so I would have to buy it. :\
