Hi. I am on my first year of sheep farming and I love it. I have decided to start this blog and share my tips and secrets and get tips. Does anyone k ow how to train a sheep dog? Mine just ate a pile of fresh sheep poop strait from one of my sheep boys butts. Harness work a bit but he still doesn’t totally listen. He has never tried to hurt the sheep. Just trying to play with them and eat their food and poop. We had a week where he had to be kept away from the sheep because he drank their pee. What do I do with this dog? I love him but he needs to smarten up.

earlier today my mom was playing with the sheep. Happy ears specifically. He claimed the roll as alpha when he was just a baby. My mom would push his head away slightly and he would lightly head but her. They when tin like this for hours. In the picture my mom is letting happy and buddy is coming over to see what is going on. We used to take the sheep on walks. This was in April of 2024 now it is December of 2024 and they still have a strong connection.

What breed of dog do you have. Different herding breeds react differently to sheep and training. If you know a trainer near you, I strongly suggest that you go there and at least watch and take some lessons.
Sheepdogs basically have 5 different commands -
Go Bye --- clockwise around the sheep
Away --- counter clockwise around the sheep
Stop
Walk Up --- walk up on the sheep
Get Out ---- leave the sheep
That's the basics. It's all about pressure around the sheep to get them to move from one place to another CALMLY.
There are others things dependent on the breed and the purpose - my dogs have all of the above, and also commands to pretty much make them a moving fence to keep our sheep in a specific area to graze.
