Anytime I have posted any natural route, yes...I have stated that I am not a vet...and this worked for my animals, but don't claim it will work for anyone else.

This is why when asked, I will PM a member instead of posting on a forum.

You are absolutely right, Greybeard, I take absolutely no responsibility for how anybody chooses to treat their animals. These are not recommendations, they are avenues that people who are interested may want to explore Preferably before their animals are sick. And I rather doubt that anyone with a $3000. herd sire is going to come here exploring different avenues of treatment. My vet would shoot me if I called him on a Sunday for a calf with a snotty nose, and he lives next door. And I'd still get a big bill.

I think a lot of people that end up here in the ER section are new to herd animals, the illness is a new one to them, or they started off with a sick animal to start with. You don't see the same people in the same situation over and over again not knowing what to do

Honestly I see the "home remedies" as they are referred to more of a management practice. In other words using more of a natural approach to husbandry, and preventing illnesses. I am definitely NOT OPPOSED to any kind of "modern day medicine". I do think the availability, although I am glad we have it, of all these different drugs allow people to somewhat be lazy and not practice the best husbandry. It's as if though too many people are resorting to "well, I'll just give 'em this".

I completely agree with you Grazer on seeking veterinary care. Unfortunately there are less and less "farm vets". One of the best vets for goats/sheep/llamas charges $200/hr and $75 farm call fee. :ep There are a few around that are great and charge far less, but always swamped. This is heavy agriculture in our area. Dairy, both goats and cows, hogs, and cattle. We have an adequate amount of vets here but there are so many places that don't. So this to me is why people share what has worked for them.

The whole BoSe issue is a problem... most people do not know that by giving it when an animal really doesn't need it it will have the same symptoms of an animal needing it.

Personally, I would never keep or breed any animal that needs constant interference with drugs wormers etc.

Exactly Southern...the garlic/AC mixture I drench our sheep with are to prevent worms...not a treatment for present worms...same as the pumpkin/squash with large seeds...same as keeping them well nourished, keeping water, feed and living conditions clean, doing hoof trims, checking eyelid colour, etc.

This section, while mostly Emergencies also includes Injuries and Cures...a reminder to all that it's not only emergencies. BYH Staff have also noted concerns that only the goat section has an organic / natural remedies area. Thank you for the feedback.

I think that this thread is a great idea!

Moving it to general section and make it all animal would be better.

One thing I will say before this turns into a fight because people both sides have strong feelings and opinions and often feel they can argue anyone into their camp.
It doesn't work folks and just serves to make us give out warnings, spend hours cleaning up threads or shut threads down

Many of the cures we enjoy today came about because of grandpa or grandma's home brewed cure.

Even when it comes to OTC or vet recommended meds I always preface with. "This has worked for me or this has never worked for me." From there it is up to the individual owner to make personal decisions or approach their own vet with what they have heard.
