My mother and sister loss a goat last night. They thought it was from the heat because we have been having heat index into the 100s. One of their goats was down Friday. They put cool water and a wet towel on her. They gave her electrolytes down her and some food. She didnt get any better Saturday and they lost her Sunday night. This morning my mother calls me saying another goat isn't acting right. She said she was fine yesterday and was eating great but this morning she won't eat and is just standing around. These goats have been in the same pasture since fall, but they are wondering if it might be something they have eaten. There isn't any good goat vets around, but my mother is going to try to get ahold of one of the vet to come out. These are my little sisters pets. She is heartbroken.

They called for help and I dont' know how to help them. I thought one of you could help. Thanks

Are they bloated??? Or did they eat anything new?? My first attempt with the electrolytes I always add baking soda and check the rumen sounds. The left side dos'nt always extend so large to the point that its obvious.. I would tap the rumen, and make sure they are burping and passing gas. And ask if anything was introduced new for food sources. It could be as simple as a new growth in pasture??? But I would definately get some baking soda in them. Im sorry. If you have anymore info about them that might help. I would get a temp on them too to see if their is any fever with this illness. Could be many things??? Need more info.

Good luck.

Have her get a tempurature on the one that is now sick.

look at the gums, do they look pink at all or white and pale?

When were they wormed or checked for worms?

How old are they?

Are they up to date on CD&T vaccine?

Would she say the animal just got weaker and weaker or was there signs of staggering around and confussion?

My first guess would be parasites.

Other possible problems goat polio or listorisis(spelling?)

tetnus or overeating disease from not being vaccinated.

If they've got a temp, give them Nuflor 1x a day for 5 days, 1cc per 100#. It's vet RX only. I've not encountered the bug it won't kill.

If they're not pale in the mucous membranes, and they don't have the poops, and are adults - I'd assume it's not parasites, as dry as it's been.
If they're kids - it *could* be cocci, which will also make a 'fine' goat 'sick' fast.

(Assuming they're not staggery, circling, etc. - to go from fine to 'acting off' overnight sounds like 'silent pneumonia.)

Get temps, check eyelids, etc.

I think as the other posters have commented that more information is needed here...

She doesn't have a fever. Her temp is 102.1. She has baking soda and mineral out for her all the time. She isn't bloated. My mom says she looks like her back around the hip brokes in sunking alittle bit. She isn't eating but did lastnight. Her gums are still pink. She is just not acting herself. She is usually out bossing all the other goats around. She is just laying down. My mom has an appointment at the vet at 3 this afternoon to see her.

no fever, laying around and weak. My vote is for parasites.

she needs a fecal done including coccidiosis.

Red cell for horses is wonderful for helping a goat recover from a worm load, along with appropriate worming ofcourse.

Goat polio and listorisis is accompanied by staggering and circling.

pneumonia would have a tempurature.
overeating disease would have a temurature and bloating scours.

My mother wormed her this morning. I will tell her about the red cell. Thank you! I will let you know what the vet says.
