Whats the best milk to feed a baby goat? Also what do u give the baby for diarrhea which I believe he developed from the milk. He is 6 days old today and the Doe would not feed him and the pepole we got him from couldnt afford to take care of him nor did they have the time..I gave him manna pro colostrum supplement and started him on Save a Kid powdered goat milk. Hes getting the hang of it but its been a slow process..getting him to suckle.

whole cows milk, works great.

You can add a little evaporated milk, and butter milk to it to bump up the calories.

the actual amounts would be to take a gallon of milk
Pour out 2 cups.
and 1 can evaporated milk
and 1 cup of buttermilk.

as far as the scours, he may need to be treated with neomycin or spectam scour halt, for bacterial scours. although it could just be from all the changes of his diet. You can get both those products from TSC.

Scours can be pretty bad in a young kid, If he isn't acting like he is feeling good, and scouring really bad, He will need treatment right away.

Yeah Im inclined to believe its from the changes in the diet..the original owners were feeding some kind of milk supplement and were not sure if he got any of the Does colostrum..unfortunately I dont believe they had any idea what they were doing ( not that I know much more) but at least Im trying to find out so I can give him a good start..we just got him yesterday. Thanks for the info.

I am not a fan of the powdered milk (it really upset our goaties little tummies). 20kids' recipe would probably be better, or even just whole cows milk (that is what we used but it does not have the calories real goat milk would have so again, 20kids' recipe would be a good bet.

Good luck and share some pics if you have a chance---love to see other people's goats :)

Started him on the whole milk formula..seems to be doing better but Im having an extremely difficult time getting to him to suck and drink the milk from the bottle. I swear it just seems like he plays with it..like he cant keep it in his mouth. I have literally forced him to hold his mouth over the nipple and drink..and he does not like that one little bit..but he is getting some milk cause he seems to be doing good. Is this normal I have tried a couple of different nipples a regular baby bottle and one made specifically for livestock ( its a red nipple u get from TSC). It dosent seem like he is getting enough to eat. I bottle fed two other goats before (they were a little older to begin with) and they had no trouble latching on and getting the hang of it.

We've had the most luck with standard baby bottles with fast flow nipples or regular nipples with the hole enlarged. It will take the kid some time to accept a bottle, but if they had been bottle feeding him already, try to contact them to see what they were using.

I'm not a fan of the powdered formulas, either. We use Vit D whole cow's milk like the formula mentioned above.
