You are preaching to the choir here Roll!Roll farms said:I was one of the first to jump on the Kiko bandwagon a few years ago, based on Forage Test results out of all states...unfortunately, because nobody else was 'on the wagon' with me...I couldn't sell the kids as well because they weren't 'white w/ a red head' and at our county fair, that's what wins.
I've been looking forward to the day when hardy goats were more important than 'show wins'...
As more people burn themselves out w/ dewormer overload / overuse / etc....I'm hoping truly intelligent goat people will stick with it and breed BETTER goats, not just pretty ones.
I sell mostly market stock so I am getting into kikos with the hopes of having a "less maintenance" operation. I know of at least one county in Indiana that now has a separate category for the kiko goats. I hope more counties and states start to see the value in this.
I look at some of these show goat boers, big heavy things and I wonder how much grain did it take to raise that monster? I cant afford that and still make money.
If the shows and fairs are really about producing the best meat goat, they are doing a very poor job. I know my goat meat eating customers will never buy a big, fat goat like that.
