Hi all. I love backyardchicken forums, but am new to this site as my husband and I just got two LaMancha kids on Sat. night. :D I would love to have a mentor nearby, someone whom we can pay or barter with to show us a few ropes. I know we have disbudding coming up and while our local vet will do it, it is expensive and we would like someone to teach us how so we are able to do it ourselves next time! We live in Chichester, NH so if anyone is close to me please let me know! I'm sure I will have TONS of questions as time goes on and this looks like a great place for it!!! Thanks all.:)

Hey there! Welcome to Backyard Herds!! I am up in West Ossipee, NH!

I suggest contacting Healthy Herds... they are a great service, and quite reasonably priced, especially compared to the vets. Let them know that Livinwright Farm in Ossipee sent you their way ;)

Email: healthyherds@gmail.com

Phone: 603-848-9015

Website: http://www.healthyherds.net

They do vaccinations, hoof trimming, disbudding, run blood tests for CAE, CL, Johnes, Pregnancy, just to name a few things :) They are more than willing to show you how to draw blood, trim hooves, disbud, castrate/wetherize, give shots, etc.

I'm over in Barnstead if you ever need any help. Can't help out on the disbudding this time (have the disbudder, but not ready yet to do it myself!) but can help out with other things as needed.
I'll second Healthy herds - I haven't had her take care of mine yet, but I did get the chance to meet her at a farm that I bought a few goats at.

(ps your link didn't work Jaqueline!) Here's her facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Healthy-Herds/134742849935984

Thank you all so much! I will be calling Healthy Herds today! :) Barnstead isn't far from me at all, I love it that someone is so close in case I ever need a quick bit of advice. We have vaccinations and hoof clippings coming up too, but I think one of my friends who used to have goats can help me with those! Thank you for such a warm welcome!!!!!

The feedback and support you have all provided has been invaluable!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!:celebrate I have contacted Jess at Healthy Herds and she is coming out here on Sat for disbudding. Hopefully at this time we can get to know her a little more as well!!! Our babies are doing great, super friendly, sweet as can be. Whole cow milk in their bottles for now. We are going to try dropping some hay in there this weekend for them. Now, I have some people to go to who are fairly local, and that is a great thing to have. :D When should I buy some halters and leads for them to start teaching them to follow? They are about 5 days old now.... Thanks again! Oh, and I know there are a bunch of wonderful threads on items needed and schedules for kids out on this site that I have poured over(lol), but any tips tricks or other simple advice would be most helpful and most appreciated! I'll try to post some pics soon.

I got the disbudding part down!!! We have a very friendly someone coming to do it for us and show us how on Sat. Thank you so much for the offer of help, I'm sure I will be referring to you! It's such a small world. Our babies are LaMancha's, so it would be great to hook up with someone else in NH who keeps them. Our eventual goal is breeding and milk and cheese. :D

I raise Boer goats, but currently also have a few pygmys and nigerians... who might be looking for a new home. I think we might just concentrate on the Boers right now :) But LaManchas are very nice goats, I just like ears! HAHA!
