Just wanted to pop in here and say hi! I'm new to this forum and will probably be hanging around the various rabbit boards pretty frequently. My name is Amanda. My husband is Matt, and we have 4 daughters ages 11, 9, 7, and 3. I am a stay-at-home-mom and have just recently taken on breeding Lionhead rabbits. First 2 times around was an accident, but my hubby said he doesn't mind if I continue breeding them! I'm sure you all want to know how we "accidentally" bred our bunnies TWICE, so I'll make this as short as I can. We bought a pair of Lionheads for our girls for 4-H last year. We were told both were does. (They are not siblings thankfully but are very close in age.) When we took them to be tattooed for 4-H I told them that we were told both rabbits were does but that I didn't know how to check myself, so I asked that he double check that for me. He also said both were does. Since they were young (we got them around 10 weeks old) and both female, we have kept them in the same cage for over a year. I went out one morning just over 5 weeks ago and, SURPRISE!!!! There were babies in the cage! We figured out really quick which rabbit was the buck and separated them. Tuesday morning when I went out to do my morning rabbit rounds I opened the doe's cage and found a 2nd litter. Since the buck and the doe have NOT been together at all since the birth of the 1st litter, I was kinda scratching my head about this one. After some reading I discovered that the doe can become pregnant very easily immediately after birth. Since litter #1 had probably been in the cage at least a few hours before I found them (they were cleaned up and nested snuggly in one corner) I guess we didn't get the buck moved out before he mated with her again. The older litter was 5 weeks old the day after the younger litter was born. Make sense? Lol! Aside from our 2 Lionheads we have 1 lop and 1 mixed breed that our neighbor gave us. We also have 4 dogs, 3 cats, 1 guinea pig, and a tank of goldfish. I look forward to getting to know all of you, and I apologize in advance if I ask some truly dumb questions!
