hi everyone, new here, we only have three sheep, a ram and two ewes. katahdin's that a beloved friend gave us as lambs
we had them years ago and decided to start with them again, we love this breed . we don't want a whole herd, just these
few as we mostly want something to eat pasture and that are pets.

Congrats, enjoy them. If you only "want just these few" I'll assume the ram will be cut -- or do you plan to also raise lamb chops? 😄 That's an option, as you know.

Whichever -- welcome to the group! Several sheepers here.
thanks for the welcome. no, we won't cut him, we will welcome the lambs for meat tho, won't make them pets or i won't be able to eat the meat, tried that many years ago, ended up giving the whole lamb to mil and fil, didn't bother them and since we lived right nest door, husband could go over and eat it there we also have chickens, the normal chickens for eggs and my bantam cochins are my pets, i hatch out up and coming hens, roosters i take to an auction. the cochins i will sell hens and roosters or give to the friends who want cochins,

I raise goats...dairy & meat. While I have used a goat for meat (it was good) it's rare to do. Yep, it's gotta be an unattached animal. My layers live their life here, occasionally I will raise a few broilers. Different area & thoughts. 😊

Most kids are sold at some point. A few raised for replacement breeders, milkers, etc. Pigs -- bought strictly to feed out & happily taken to butcher.

We're such softees...😋 In a good way.

Welcome! I have sheep - a couple dorpers, mutts and dorper x mutt. 27 at the moment. I take them out to graze on the ranch using my dogs to move them and act as fences. Fun for me, the dogs, and the sheep & lambs. Some sheep have names and others don't. We do have one for our freeze and a handful of others are sold for meat, pets, or taken to the auction.

When I had just a few, I cut all the boys at a week or two old and named them Dinner. It helps to disassociate the cute feeling. I have never processed one myself, I take them to be processed. I’m ok on chickens, hogs and deer, just not on lambs. If I had to, I would, but I don’t have to.

I raise Katahdins and have 26 breeding ewes and 3 rams. At the moment I have 9 lambs, have 4 ewes due starting today through end of the week plus several others the look like maybe. Naturally it is coming a storm tonight.

I don't think I could eat anything I named.

I have bantam chickens, too, Sussex and Dominiques. Like you do, I send the extra cockerels to auction.

Welcome!

Eastern NC. I have taken a total of eleven cockerels to the local auction. Most of them were about 12 weeks, not in adult plumage, so I only got $5-$7 each...except for one of the Speckled Sussex. I held on to him a little longer, he was about 16 weeks. There was a bidding war and he sold for $30!

crazy isn't it? who would have thought that a rooster would have gone for that much a few years ago, they would have called us crazy to expect to sell for that, now a young hen, shes worth it, right now even the eggs are going
for 4 or 5 dollars a dozen, world sure has changed, good for the sellers bad for the buyers that want live stock just starting out.
