Hi from Twentynine Palms.

We are beginner homesteaders and are working to become self sustaining. We started with a vegetable garden (unfortunately, it took all of 3 days after everything started to sprout for the desert squirrels to devour it all! We'll try again in Spring with a more secure set up.) We also have chickens and they are doing great! Currently just layers, but will be starting some meat birds as well come Spring.

We would like to have pigs, but it seems a bit daunting. We would like to raise them for our own meat and possibly to sell. Does anyone have any experience raising pigs in the desert? What breed would be best for the climate?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

:welcome from New Jersey.

Good Luck with your Pig adventure. Don't have pigs but there are some forum members who do raise pigs. Try looking at the Pig section of this forum for any info you need.

All Livestock is daunting IMHO, but what I'm reading once you get going, it's truly rewarding.

Was out there a few years ago--love the lack of humidity, even given the high temps! Wouldn't mind living out that way except for earthquakes & the lack of color...
