Oh nice, I am near Lebanon NH. There's a goat farm somewhere down near Warner. I don't get down that direction much but I do like it down there.

My goats have some woods and some grass. They love to be in the woods in good weather but don't go far from their house in rain or snow!

Where in Maine are you now?

Welcome to BYH from upstate NY!!! Glad to have someone looking into having animals. They're very rewarding, but more work than you might think. I'm not really a goat or chicken person, but there are a lot of those on here! Check out the Backyard Chickens website. It has tons of chicken people, so it may be helpful. Love your profile picture, btw.

Thank you for the warm welcome. :weee I lived in Alaska when I was a kid..... many moons ago. :old Homesteading in Alaska must have its challanges with the short growing period. Do you have greenhouses? We have some cold winters here and I'm trying to get ideas for winter months (growing fresh veggies, feeding chickens and goats). Any advice would be welcomed. :)
I am sure it is going to have it struggles, we plan on feeding a lot of hay.

We just moved up here 3 months ago, so I am not sure what the best growning seasons are.

Ahhhhh yes, the balancing act between rural vs suburbia. It's difficult when you want to start/have a little homestead to become more self sufficient but have to balance the need to be employed, and therefore stay within easy reach of the "big" city. Closer to "civilization" you are, the more expensive everything becomes. I worked in the mortgage industry for almost 10 years. Got out during the housing/mortgage market crash ~2007/2008. Often thought about going back but the govt (fed & state) put so many "requirements" on it (licensing <taxing>, mandatory education, certifications <taxing>, testing, bonding, etc.) it priced me right out of the industry. Hurt a lot of honest folks who could no longer afford to keep doing it. Anyway, Portland isn't really a "big" city and there is "country" within an hour drive, so you should be able to find something that will fit your needs. Hope you can anyway. Land prices up that way are nothing like they were when I was last living there.

Welcome from Ohio! Your plans sound good, I wish you luck. Homesteading can be a lot more work than you think, but it can also be very satisfying working on your own land and producing your own food. Hope you find good property!
