Hi, my name is Brandi.
We just bought a house with 5 acres, 3 of those acres are fenced off for horses. I have 2 Missouri Foxtrotters and they have never been on a piece of land this big, they are having the time of their lives.

I also have 4 dogs German Shepherd named Tex, Sawyer I adopted from our local SPCA (he is a mix breed), Roxy another mix breed and Rowdy Aussie/Border Collie mix.

I am contemplating on getting some chicken, I ran across your sister group BackYard Chickens (they are the ones that referred me to this forum) I am excited about starting new adventure, and I just wish spring would hurry up and get here....

Thank you so much for letting me join.

Hi Brandi. :frow Welcome to BYH. It’s so nice to have you join us!

DH and I are in Texas, SE of Sulphur Springs, on five acres, also. We started with a rooster, hen and turkey, left by the previous owners. Our first project was to build a decent chicken coop and covered run, to protect our birds from airborne predators. Then, we added 4 wethered (castrated) Nigerian Dwarf (ND) goats and two LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs).

In the four years we have been here, we have added a LOT to the property, in fencing, buildings and now are adding a vegetable garden, so we can sell at farmer’s market, to help support the homestead. I learned how to run a chainsaw and have cut down quite a few trees, to allow more sunlight, for the garden. Next, we will be cutting down about ten more trees, we can build a greenhouse. My plan is to eventually do aquaponics, so I can raise “safe/non-toxic” fish to eat. :celebrate I love fish, but with toxic oceans and antibiotic laden farm-raised fish, I can’t bring myself to eat fish lately. :hide

I was going to refer you to @Baymule, who has horses, but I see she has chimed in, since I started writing this. She also has some awesome sheep, and raises feeder pigs. :) Something I would like to do, but DH isn’t quite there yet. :hu

Anyway, welcome (again) to BYH. :frow You got some good advise over at BYC. :D

Greetings and welcome to BYH Brandi, from NE TX! So glad you joined us. :frow There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. You'll get to "meet" folks at the same time. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Oh, and we all love pics, so post them anytime you feel the need! Please make yourself at home!

PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this post & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
