I am not familiar with the layout of this site, so I apologize if this is answered elsewhere. I am just wondering what a good protocal for deworming goats is. I have had goats for about 8 years, but I still feel like a newbie on alot of things. I have 1 Nubian wether, (apx 10-11yrs old)1 Nubian/Boer wether (8yrs), 1 Nubian/Boer doe (7yr) and 1 Suffolk x ewe ( 7yr not a goat, I know, but don't tell her that). In the past I have wormed them with and without fecals being done prior. I used to use Panacur, but have been using Valbazen the past 1 1/2yrs. I usually worm spring/fall. It seems like every time it comes time to worm, I feel like I'm not doing it right. I can never seem to find a straight answer on line or from the vets either. So, I'm wondering, what do you use to worm, how often (like 3 times at 10 day intervals?) and how many times a year. I agree that it is always best to do a fecal first, so you know what you are dealing with and as not to have the worms build up a resistance. Sometimes, it isn't always easy for me to do that, though. I have called a few local large animal vets, and without a fecal, they won't give me much info. I will also add that I did worm them with Valbazen 6 days ago. I wish I had waited to do so. Thanks so much for any help!

Welcome to BYH!

Definitely read the Parasite Management article of mine that autumnprairie linked to.

Deworming should be done on an as needed basis, not on a schedule. Deworming on a schedule or when not needed creates drug resistant worms.

Fecal testing is one way to decide when to deworm, FAMACHA scoring is another, body scoring is yet another. Information on all can be found in that article.

If you have further questions, please do post them. We are all here to learn from each other.
