This morning I was surprised to see this hawk at the birdbath.

She, I think it's a she, let me come very close to her( about 6 to 8 feet) and get her photo I took about 30 photos! Some with the flash, and she just looked at me, no fear.

I think she is pretty. I won't be letting my chickens free range anytime soon.

Beautiful picture!! Thanks for posting it. I too love the way the hawks look. I have my chicken pen configured so the hawks can't get a good swoop at my girls.

They are God's majestic creatures, and they must make a livin'
too, just not with my chickens!!!

How cool is that?! Locally we have Redtail Hawks, which are quite large. Probably would have tipped your birdbath over!!

I have seen another hawk species near my winter bird feeding area, about pigeon size. I did in fact think it was a grey pigeon from the back perched on the gate. He turned his head and I then got the steely glare from under those predator brows! No pigeon there!! Not sure what kind, maybe a Sharp-shinned Hawk, they are small and year around birds here, according to the bird book.

No pet fowl here, so I just can enjoy watching and hearing the local hawks fly around. The Red-tailed are quite busy catching rabbits and small varmints in the fields, so I see them a lot. We usually have a hatch nearby, with parents teaching youngsters to hunt out back. We have the tallest tree around, so a good spot for them to watch from!

Congrats on the photo. I didn't get one quick enough at the feeder, he was gone and haven't see one since.

That is funny!! The thing is when the hawks are around you don't even hear another bird making a sound! All the birds run for cover!

On PBS last night, they had a bird program, that said the local hawks protect the Humming Bird nests form preditors. We do have lots of Humming Birds in our neighborhood.
