Hi everyone! This is my first post, and I'm really looking forward to the wealth of information I'm sure to gain from you all! I'm bran new to goats and am jumping in with both feet.lol we just purchased a 6 month old pygmy/Nigerian dwarf cross buck, a 10 week old pygmy doeling and a 4 week old pygmy doeling. We have 3 boys that I would love to have the experience of showing these gals! They are not registered though. Are there ffa classes that don't require the does to be registered? Thank you for your info!

I would suggest you contact the 4H program in your area. I know that the Eastern NC 4H program conducts regular clinics on showing livestock.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your goats.

I have to admit, We never expected our bottle baby to weasel her way into our hearts like she has. She spends quite a bit of time sitting on the couch with one of our sons, watching cartoons. It's difficult to think of her as a farm animal.LOL

I 2nd the suggestion to look into 4-H. Kids can be "Clover" members when they are 5 yrs old as of Jan 1st, but they cannot show until they are 8 yrs old as of Jan 1st. Example: my middle child turned 8 on April 18th this year, but cannot show in the fair until NEXT year, because he was 7 yrs old on Jan 1st of this year. There is SO MUCH more to 4-H beyond the agricultural aspects!

In my 4-H area, and IME in Oklahoma, pygmy/dwarf animals will not be very competitive - but you SHOULD be able to show them, especially in Showmanship (which IMO is the most rewarding class to compete in anyway). The 4-H I have dealt with is broken into 2 categories: Meat and Dairy. Dairy is 99% breeding animals (does and doelings - no bucks allowed) and Meat has breeding AND market animals (sometimes you'll see a dairy wether being shown in a market class, but it never places well).

Oh my goodness. I mistakenly assumed that since it was the children participating, it would be more simplified. LOL yes, "Merlot" was wearing one of my one year olds diapers.lol it was NOT easy to keep on.:)
