This morning my neighbor called me at 5:30am, I was still asleep, to let me know he put a young hawk in my front yard. He found it with the mom near his swimming pool. The baby doesn't fly very well yet. It walked right up to him, he put out his hand and the young bird went right up in his hand (accidently cut my neighbor's finger with one of his very sharp talons) Anyhow he put the bird in a box with a towel and a bowl of water. His thinking was that the parent birds come frequently to my birdbath so... maybe the young bird would be safer in my yard than next to his swimming pool.

But, by the time I got dressed, and went out in the front yard, the box was empty! I was afraid maybe one of the neighborhood cats got it. But later in the day, my neighbor called all excited he spotted the young hawk in one of the trees near his house. So I went and got a photo of the young hawk.

Here it is...

Oh! What a lovely story and what wonderful pictures. It brought tears to my eyes. Good tears.

Can I steal your thread and post some pictures of owls that would sit just feet from our window at night and watch us as they also staked out the large insects and creatures that were attracted to our light outside.

Sure, I think everyone would like to see some owl photos...

Glad to hear more about the birdbath hawks. Too bad for baby that he appears to be in danger. Parents may help him, wild things are funny that way. Perhaps he is being a bit difficult about flying. Sometimes just a day or so more will get them going after first failures.

I don't have any up close photos, but our hawks are doing nicely here. I am hoping mama gets to working on the rabbit population that is exploding. Each time I mow the fields I have rabbits everyplace running away. She SHOULD be able to see them in the short grass! Always fun when the babies get flying, they call back and forth for long times to track each other. Ours are the Red-Tails for the most part, usually have several babies flying by fall, from a few different pairs.

Owls are ALWAYS cute. We mostly hear them in winter, when the cold drives them a bit south. Don't often see them, just hear them talking on cold nights. I think they hunt the rabbits who come to eat fallen hay at the horse feeders. Horses come in at night, so hay is unbothered for rabbit munching.

Cool story and nice pictures. As pretty as hawks are, I prefer if they don't hang around my yard. At least not while my chickens are free ranging. The only predators we've lost any of our chickens to are hawks.
