Hey everyone, glad I stumbled across this site. We are a very small self sufficient homestead on an acre. My son and I raise a large garden, fruit trees, run a flock of a dozen sheep, six goats, 30 laying hens 15 turkeys, a couple pigs and a horse. We are looking at starting rabbitry to offset our grocery bill, show for 4h, and work on reviving the American blue rabbit bed if we can get ahold of any registered breeders through this site.
Nice to be here!

Welcome :frow, glad you joined us! Sounds like you have a nice mix going on. We have chickens, rabbits- both Californians and French Angora and goats. Have you looked on the ARBA rabbit site to see if there are breeders close to you with the American blue?

I'm tagging a few others to see if they might know more...

Also, check the national breed club to find more. But, in my experience, where one has them, they know others who do too. My contact got back to me already and said there are breeders on the west coast but she doesn't know names. So here is what I found on the ARBA site.

Welcome from NW Mississippi!...:frow
It sounds like ya have quite the array of animals there. We have goats, chickens, ducks, and cats on our 20acres here. I can't help ya with rabbits, tho. There are some really knowledgeable people here that do have them. It will be interesting keeping up with your "Happenings" there. We all love pics, so feel free to share as ya wish...again...:welcome

Welcome from NY!!! Rabbits will probably not help offset your grocery bill as much as you hope. While feed is relatively cheap(I average at about $17.50 for a 50 lb bag), you have to buy lumber and wire for hutches, and buy the rabbits themselves, which can be VERY pricey, but its better to pay the money for good rabbits than to be frustrated with bad rabbits. Also, rabbits do not often "breed like rabbits". Complications arise in pregnancies, breedings don't take, dams fail to care for, and even kill, their kits, snuffles or coccidiosis kill entire litters, or predators break into the rabbitry. Just be sure to take into account all the variables before deciding to raise rabbits, and good luck!
