Well, we had a couple of Holland Lops. Then, we were asked to adopt three Mini Rexes. (Oops, we forgot to mention the two does each have a small litter.) Make that TEN Mini Rexes. So, we can sell the babies, leaving us with five total. I can handle this.

Well, our son wants to keep one of the little ones. I am fine with that. Then, my two nephews each want to "keep" one. Of course, they can't have them at home, so we will "house" them. Now, our son has "traded" the neighbor one of the babies for a baby Lionhead. (At least it was one-for-one, so no increase in numbers.) :D

I have two of the babies sold, so that is a step in the right direction. Six more hutch pens and we are getting eight more (just have to pick them up). Is this how it is supposed to go?

I don't know about how it's supposed to go but that's about how it went with us. We wanted to breed and raise New Zealand Reds and now we have 1 NZ red, two NZ whites and six Lionheads. Rabbit math is almost as crazy as chicken math!

Yes, I can relate to that. I have to say, though, that we had help with the chicken math due to a family of raccoons. You learn quick in this business, don't you? Well, we are less three raccoons and still have 11 chickens left. :D Some doors, improved fencing, netting and traps have us feeling a bit better about our girls.

No problems with the rabbits so far. :fl

Greymane,

Finding out that no matter how much you plan, in the Animal World it never goes the way it's supposed to. I tried to keep to a plan and then we saw Willard. And the rest is history.

I'm finding out you just go with the flow. That's your best bet.

Wishing you luck with your rabbits. :)

I have found with rabbits, plans are tenative at best, specially when it comes to your numbers :D
Specially when you have children that you love that want pets but can't have them at home so... guess what... "Hey aunty, can they stay at your farm? Pleeeeease!"
We have a mini-satin, a small flock of bantam chickens, and will have some dairy feeder calves here come next summer that I never intended on having. The only saving grace is that mini-satin is an amazingly meaty little rabbit. So at least he still gets used on my larger does.

OH! And kudos to your kid on the trade! The barter system can be a beautiful thing LOL

I am dieing laughing over here because it is so true we bring em home then build something. LOLOL I do have to say thought, my rabbit project is the only one I actually planned out and planned well and then waited for my breeding stock. I had decided my breed and that I would start with excellent quality, where I was getting my start up trio and planned for a year before it was built. It actually worked out great!!!!!!!! But, we dont talk about that. As I believe the chicken project most likely cost a good grand. Those are some SPEnSive............ eggs we got here. LOLOL

:p glad i could make ya laugh. my mother is the queen of orphans, no matter the species. people, dogs, cats,...

i think i may quickly surpass her title though once me and the boyfriend move to the farm. i have a rough sketch of a six year goat plan. and i hope to start my own rabbitry in a year or so. so ya i've pretty much lived by that motto for most of my life. for a while my mom had 15 dogs, 5 cats, and 3 kids. ;) she's crazy
