last week I purchased a 4 yr old nubian doe that was in with a buck for about 2 months. would she be bred in this time frame or do nubians come into heat seasonally?
from what I have always been told yes. But I have had people with nubians tell me that if you have a good bill he can make them come in if they are interested in him.
My Nubs breed nearly year round....they're not as seasonal as the Swiss breeds, but not quite as "any old time" as the boers.
I put mine in w/ the bucks in July and I will have kids in December.
I remember the first time it was explained to me about goat breeding season..."They breed during the "Brrrr" months...I thought she meant the COLD "brrrr" months....she really meant: Septembrrr, Octobrrr, Novembrrr, Decembrrrr.
We've had a cool summer without as much sunshine as we'd normally see, and our nubis are already taking turns going into heat.. I wouldn't have expected it until the middle of this month, but here we are..
That said, if your summer has been unusually cool or cloudy -- "the summer that wasn't," as seems to be the case in a lot of places this year -- then I wouldn't doubt the doe's bred.
However, pretty much only a vet can tell you... Guessing bred-status is a game all goat people engage in from time to time, but I'm tellin ya...goats are they're really, really good at hiding pregnancy until the last few weeks, and labor until the last minute.
If you want to know for sure, wait a few weeks and have a vet preg check her.
we would put does in with buck after returning from 4-H fair and had kids in dec and jan. guess all the excitement and traveling brought them in early. this year, waited until august to come in, no fair ride for these.
