We have witnessed a miracle on our little farm the past few days. Oreo, our Nubian who lost premature triplets a month ago, has found herself a baby! I had purchased a week old, exclusively bottle fed buckling off of Craigslist a week ago. We were keeping him separated from everyone else, as he was living in the house. Well, my daughter had taken him outside to enjoy the sunshine and was milking Oreo on the lawn when Captain Jack got real curious about what she was doing. He moved right in and took over the milking job! Oreo was NOT impressed. That was Friday. Today when I took him out to her, she came up to meet him, stood still without me holding her, and let him eat. She has very little milk, so we are supplementing, but she has claimed him! We are working now on him recognising her as mom. He went around the pasture tonight playing 'are you my mother?' With the ducks, horse, and other goats. He knows that she is the one he eats off of, but doesn't seem to see her as his protector, snuggle buddy, etc. At any rate, I'll take it!
