I want to pasture raise chickens on our 5 acres in the goat pasture. I can picture it now, the goats think I have a provided a toy for them and 6 months later my coop is trashed.

I was thinking of making a coop that was A-Frame style with steep sides and no flat roof so the goats couldn't play on it. Has anyone ever done this before? How did you deal with the goats?

thanks

Try to keep it between 10-20 but could go as high as 30.

I let my chickens free range with the goats. I had MAJOR issues keeping the darn goats out of the coop. I ended up using steel sheets with a small 6x8 hole that lead into a small outer area (4x6) that then had another door to the coop. I also put a log and cement blocks around the outside door so the goats can't get on their bellies and wiggle into the coop.

Our coop is 6x6x6 square attached to the side of our barn.

If your goats can get on it, they will. I purchased a wood dog house Originally from Petco and put in the pasture for a goose next. It took the goats less than a week to have it smashed to the ground. King of the mountain was really cool until the mountain collapsed.

I have built my goose houses out of 2X6 and 2X4 and they have stood up to the goat test, but the lumber was all recylced, so it did not cost me anything.

Yes, goats love to play on metal A-frame chicken coops. Personal experience. Ours sleep on our other chicken coop with a metal roof unless it's cold (not often) or raining. It's the "spot" that the herd queen takes, and everyone else tries to steal. I would just build it strong enough that they don't hurt it -ours is, thankfully, because it wasn't in the master plan for it to be a goat bunk.

If you make the door small, with a board right inside it so the chickens have to go around- then the goats can't get it. Our door is also 3' off the ground so little bitty baby goats can't get in either.

I use the goats to graze the pasture that I'll be putting the chickens on to first. When it's short enough that the chickens can move around and eat it effectively, we exclude the goats from the chicken areas with the electric netting sold by Premier1 Supplies. Portable fencing allows us to easily move things around in the pasture.

I put stock panels around my coop and a hot wire. The chickens can get through the squares in the stock panel and the goats respect it all because of the hot wire.
