I am hoping that Joel Salatin will bring the more regenerative practices that he believes in, and writes about and teaches, and bring some balance to some of the big ag practices. I am all for more natural methods and less chemicals, but there is a balance to producing food on a scale that is needed in this country to supply the demand. Yes, there are alot of exports... but we also turn around and import alot of food.... beef and pork and poultry etc.... Most of what is exported is high end cuts and the lowest cuts that go to different ethnic cultures... we import alot of average type beef that gets mixed into ground beef as ours often needs to have the "quality" lowered.... Like to take 80/20 ground beef down to the 70/30 blend that is most bought in the stores... also for processed beef products. All this is tied up in the trade agreements... we could supply most of our own beef if it all stayed here....but we get tied into these trade agreements.....there's alot more to it that I don't understand either...

I am glad in one way that he is going to go to the USDA.... he is going to get another perspective that is opposite of what he espouses. I know that he is not ignorant of some of what goes into the whole farming end... but he has been totally against much of what "modern agriculture" has evolved into. Since he is a well known person in the regenerative world, it will be a good way to get a "toe in the door" with the whole "grass farming" aspect of farming.

So many people do not know about the differences in farming practices... except all they know is "cruel feedlots" and cows out on pretty grass pastures. I am hoping that this will bring about some of the "inbetweens" ... more greys than black and white. I am sure that there are people that would not like what we do either... no one method of farming works for everyone... and farmers try to find ways to make a living in different ways. Judicious use of things like chemicals, and antibiotics, help to provide food for the masses... not all good and not all bad.

I for one could not afford to eat meat if I had to buy it from the Salatin farm enterprises... or anything else they produce. But he has developed the clientele, and promoted his way of farming as the best way... yet they rely on people like us to provide the feeder cattle that they raise to butcher... We sold feeder calves to them a couple years.
