Pig Identification questions

I am so very confused! I am reading Choosing and Keeping Pigs by Linda McDonald-Brown and it says that you must ear tag, slapmark, or tattoo your pigs. Do you have to do that if you're keeping them as pets? Can someone please tell me why?

We ear notched EVERY pig that was ever born here whether it was a cross breed or purebred BUT we had a lot of sows so needed to know who belonged to who. If you are just raising a few pigs for yourself then no identification is needed unless you want to start keeping records.
