I recently adopted a very small Pom. She will be a year old on August 22 and is 3.2 pounds. I have no intention of breeding her because of her size. My son has a male Pom that is 4 months old. When do I need to worry about accidental breeding?

I want to make sure I get her fixed before this becomes an issue. Everything I find online assumes that you want to breed them, not prevent it.

She's at the perfect age for a spay. She's full grown (lol), and growth plates of bones are closed (I show - conformation, obedience, agility, herding, and more; and am a trainer, and for performance dogs you are best to wait until growth plates close in the long bones, as well as getting benefit from the hormones). An unspayed female is a increased risk from pyometra as they age - so I would do it. Best is to have the surgery done at the midpoint between her heat periods.
