I don't take any stock in the "pooch test" and I myself think the whole thing is crap. I also hate it when people post pictures of their doe's "back end" to ask if their pregnant. Best way to tell is to have an ultra-sound or just wait a few months and check to see if they have gained weight or look fatter/pregnant. Wait and see if they bag up. There are lots of way to tell if your goat is pregnant and I don't think that is one of them. I think it's just weird.

LOL Straw!!!!! :gig

We start checking the back end of our ewes once their udders begin to get larger...with the first ewe pregnant and close I still remember hubby coming in and telling me I had to go check Dolly because she had an "angry" twat...

She had a lamb two days later. I go more for how big they are, how uncomfortable they are getting up and down, kicking from the lamb, and large udder and "dropping"...this year I hope to get it right checking for ligaments...had no luck last year with that?

A word of advice...

Don't ever google it.

Not pretty. Not pretty at all.

Does this page help explain the "pooch test?"

I saw it and wondered if it looked accurate or like total...well...BS.
I think it is agreat way to tell if they are pregnant. In my experience if you are used to looking at your own animals and then keep an eye on them, you can tell they are pregnant from the pooch test before you start to see an udder filling out. It helps to be familiar with your own animals and some are more obvious than others. It is harder to just go off of a picture of someone elses animals. Normally for me 6 to 8 weeks pregnant is when I can start to tell. I find my nubian crosses are more obvious earlier in their gestation than some of my boers.

In my experience if the area is starting to look less wrinkled and smoother and more longated she is for sure pregnant, but not all does change as quickly or as much and some does are much harder or impossible to tell with the pooch test. so bloodwork or ultrasound would be your only 100 % or 99% way of telling, I am sure you realize that.

It is a great tool used with all the other clues.
