Properly disbudded?

I don't have any experience with the paste - but I've heard horror stories. I'd band before I'd use the paste. Can you clip/shave that area and then post a pic?

I know it seems like a lot we are asking -- just not "there" and want to help. We have pretty much all been in some sort of crunch before....like or worse than this.

Well I didn't shave her head but here's a couple of pictures that I took tonight. She has one dark horn and one white one.

They are definitely growing. I just can't tell if they're scurs or true horns.

Her sisters don't seem to be growing as fast. Or maybe she's just so dark I'm not noticing hers as much...

Also...should I text the lady I bought them from and let her know about this? I mean, she burned the doelings horns when they were around 7 weeks...it should've been sooner, right? I kinda feel like she should know (she's sorta a newbie still) but I don't want to offend her.

This method needs to be done when the nubs are just forming under the skin. It actually burns the cells that form horn, thus you wait to feel the formation, then caustically kill the cells. She waited too long.

A vet -- who KNOWS goats -- can remove but it's not as easy a procedure as early burn. Goats, in general, do not do anesthesia well!!

They can be blunted when mature -- 2 yrs? -- but never totally sawed down. Horn is hollow and bloody. But some of the top portion can be removed and filed blunt There are methods "banding" but, it's messy & a long wait. I do not disbud -- but researched a lot about it. Hate the thought of the disbudding but, it IS the best method. Everyone detests this chore.

If you paid "pet price" I'd advise her FYI, do much earlier. If you paid 300-500...ask for a refund or her pay vet, since SHE said it would be done.

From experience, we have a registered buck who was dehorned by breeders vet.....fast forwaed a year and a half, we had our vet come out to saw off one scur that curled almost into skull....
Tell the person you got the kid from, they need to be done early, espically bucks ....doe's take a little longer to nub.

In this case yes too late.
However, if they were done too soon (I know not in this case) and the barrel of the iron was large than it can injure the bud but not kill it. I see this often and they end up with horns. You can also have the same results by not going long enough or deep enough. Bucks are most difficult and 50% get scurs anyway.

The latest we have disbudded a ND was 6-7 weeks, a doe... she was so itty bitty teeny tiny that her buds were not even ready til then.

No, just no. Even when a vet does it there is no guarantee. If they need redone your vet will charge you for the redo.
At this point if the breeder was so obligated to pay for a redo by the vet, what happens then if it doesn't work? The goat dies? The breeder would now have to refund the cost of the goat, pay the vet anyway etc. No, far too many variables.
There is only so much control when it comes to disbudding. It is not an exact science it is by look and feel and experience. I have bought goats that ended up with scurs from breeders that have been breeding and disbudding for 15-30 years. It happens.
Vets may or may not do a good job. A vet I know lost 2 kids in his office while disbudding, since then many of the goats he does end up with horrid scurs, even does (which is rare) mostly because when you are disbudding you are afraid to go to long. Vets hate disbudding too.

We have had to have a few surgically done... at our cost.
The does can be reburned at this time but may need sedation to cut out part. The bucks Ugh... I'd just keep them in check with a gigli wire.

Out of all the bucks I have ever bought only 1 buck did not end up with scurs. 1, a nubian.

You should tell the person and send them pics so they learn from it and can do better.

I would band them. Take a file and file notches in the horn on opposite sides. Slip on a castration band and let it fit into the notches. Then wrap with tape to keep the band on.

I paid $350 total, for the 2 doelings. So they weren't that spendy.
I wouldn't feel comfortable confronting her and asking/telling her to pay for a redo on the disbudding but I think I'll let her know what happened so she can avoid this in the future.
