You can get a hand-held version of that, too. But for the first tilling of the season, I use a spading fork. We've never used a rototiller and have extensive gardens.....of course, we expand bit by bit, not in huge chunks! The chickens are an enormous help, too. I use them to help till in the spring, then open the gates again in the fall and let them finish the fall clean-up. I've even been known to raise a few broilers on the biggest garden in the fall, and there is nothing but soft, smooth dirt by the time the chickens go to freezer camp.
If I had more confidence with moving the pigs, I'd use them to do the initial tilling where we want to break sod.
