Questions about products I'm considering ordering

I have lots of questions. Please bear with me, I'm a newbie to goats. I have 5 Nigerian Dwarfs. I would rather spend a few dollars on something and not need it than need it and have to wait for it to arrive (speaking from experience, and having 16 chickens die while the post office shipped meds to the wrong address and having to drive 50 miles to get the meds that were sweltering in 113* temps)...so being prepared and over spent is okay in my book.

I'm putting together my Jeffers order for all kinds of things I am going to get for my goats and chickens and had a few questions.

I saw in the dehorner section a product called Dehorning Paste. The discrption says to use it before 2 months, no cutting or bleeding. Would it be safe to assume this is a product to inhibit the growth of horns? I don't want to order it and find out its not something I can or something I shouldn't use.

I'm also ordering enough Essential CDT+3 To vaccinate all the goats.

Is there any other vaccines I should get (1 unknown aged doe with a doeling she nurses, 2 bottle fed bucks, one 7 month old doe) my 7 month old will be bred an about 5 or so months.

Corid 1.25% Pellets for coccidiosis prevention. It seemed similar to Deccox Medicated crumbles but the label indicated a need to use less (volume) of medication per animal weight. It said .04 per 100 lbs and deccox was 1 oz per 100 lbs so it seemed I would have more treatments with Corks. Please correct me if this isn't right.

Should I pick up a pink eye vaccine or pink eye/blackleg combo?
What about a Pasturella vaccine?
Or Chlamydia vaccine?
Mastitis vaccines??

Or is there one vaccine that will cover most of my concsrns?

Which wormer should I use?

Is there any nutrition suppliments that are good to have on hand in the event of a sick goat?

I'm also thinking of ordering Tylan 200? Any advice? I chose this product as it would serve a dual purpose for the chickens as well.

I wanted to order Ivermectin but don't know which to get.

There are so many choices. Any help is appreciated. I was going to call and ask their advice but didn't want to follow advice of some who may have never even seen a real goat before if that makes any sense. I figured those who have goats/chickens could steer me in the right direction.

I'll comment on what I know / use...

I don't like / use dehorning paste...some here do...I prefer to use a disbudding iron.

I only use Essential 3 +T for 'healthy' goats. I don't own the others you mentioned.

Some folks use the others...if you're not going to show and be bringing in other animals, you should be fine w/ just the E3+T.
Most of the other vaccines are 'made' for cattle and their effectiveness with goats isn't always 100%.

I prefer to use DiMethox for cocci prevention...Never tried the Corid, can't comment on that one, sorry.

Your dewormer needed will be based on which worms your goats have a problem with. "White" dewormers work better on tapes. Ivermectin /cydectin works better for HC (Barperpole).
You DO NOT need to deworm them on a schedule, and probably won't ever deworm all at once.
My best recommendation is to read up on deworming goats (google it, read all you can, esp. anything published by a university) before you order anything.
Ivermectin (the generic injectable) is a good one to have on hand, but learn when to use it. It's given orally for deworming goats.

I like red cell as a supplement to have on hand, unfortunately it comes in gallons and w/ just a few goats you'd probably never use the whole jug.
I used to keep Nutri Drench on hand. There is also a product called, Power Punch.

I've never used / owned Tylan...can't comment on it.

I've used Biomycin (brand of tetracycline-based antibiotic) but ...it's not my 'go to' drug of choice.
I tried tetracyclines a few times w/ goats w/ URI probs, it generally didn't do much and I had to get Nuflor from the vet.
I actually use more penicillin (Pen G) than anything, when someone gets a wound it's the drug of choice, also for rough kiddings.

I'm sort of rushing this reply (gotta head to the barn) but there's my quick answer...let me know if you have any questions.

I'm slowly accumulating things only as I need them but fortunately I have a couple of local sources so I don't have to order everything online. One thing I keep for supplement is Probios. Also might want to have some Tetanus anti-toxin on hand. It's not a substitute for the vaccine but used if there's an injury is my understanding. I fortunately haven't needed the little vile I bought but it's there just in case. Most people advise against dehorning paste, but that's your choice. Other than that you're on the right track. Can't really go wrong following Roll's advice. ;)

I've done a bit of reading and decided against the.paste. I think I missed the dehorning/burning window. They hatched on the 30th and the doe & doeling is about a week and a half old. My other goat has horns. I need to file the sharp tips off. The doe has no horns. I've touched her head only a few times but she is a bit timid so I can't tell how it was done. Id really like to see. The kids are all getting horns. I can feel the buds. Maybe I can find someone who will teach me for later on down the road.

Is the anti tetenus something to give in addition to the CDT+3, But only as an additional prevention after injury?

Is the probios labeled for cows/calves pr sheep?

Any of the probiotic pastes will work. I used to buy the cow version but it's harder to use (big tube / small hands) so I get the small tube made for horses.
I rarely need it b/c I top dress our goat's feed w/ powdered probios when I deworm or there's lush new spring grass, etc. Easier to give it to everyone at once that way.

The CDT (toxoid) given 1 (and some folks do it 2x) time per year should 'prevent' tetanus...but if they get a deep puncture wound it is generally recommended that you give them the antitoxin immediately, or if an unvaccinated goat gets sick w/ it, the toxiod is part of the treatment.

It's my understanding (and if I'm wrong, someone correct me) that the toxoid will 'cancel out' the antitoxin, and you then have to readminister their vaccinations again a few weeks after the toxoid has been given.

Honestly, when one of ours gets a deep cut, I use Pen G (which is also used to treat tetanus) for at least 7 days to prevent infection. I've never given the shot of toxoid. So far so good...but it could be dumb luck.

Since sometimes even vaccinated goats (or so I'm told / have read) can get tetanus, I do keep the toxoid on hand. Never needed it on our goats, thankfully... but it's cheap and it's here, just in case.

I'm betting your kids could still be disbudded. Any goat vets around that do it, or other breeders you could have help you w/ it?

I've found it's much cheaper to order the little tub of Probios powder than to get the paste. Most of mine like the taste and will eat it straight out of my hand when offered, but if I have to drench someone I just mix it with a little molasses and water.

My little doeling is sick. *sigh*. I ended up running to the feed store this morning and paying a 400% mark up on meds. I'm pretty certain its pneumonia. I gave her a does of meds and in just a matter of hours she looks and sounds better.

I've got vaccines coming next week. I had a feeling this was going to happen.
