Rabbit Breeding - Pedigrees

I originally was thinking about breeding rabbits just for meat for my family. But now I think that I would sell some of the extra bunnies to local 4-h and FFA kids. I don't know a lot about pedigrees, but I know they are important when showing and such. Is there a website that explains pedigrees in depth? And what else do I need to know regarding this? Thanks

First off, Welcome to the Forum.

Your best bet is to go to the ARBA official website. They will have all the info you need to know about rabbits and pedigrees. Also ARBA has a Book of Standards for all rabbits. This will also help you to understand the standards needed for each rabbit.

Yes, I would recommend going to the ARBA website, it is most helpful. Personally I won't buy a rabbit if it doesn't come with a pedigree. Pedigrees make it so much easier to see the bloodlines of your bunny, and keep better records of your herd. They help in color prediction on some breeds, and help you see what kind of show backing you rabbit might have. It also insures that you have a purebred rabbit, and that the rabbitry you purchased it from cared enough to keep good records on her herd.

A pedigree is not usually required to show a rabbit, even in ARBA shows. Unlike dog shows, you don't need to prove the rabbit's ancestry to show it. However, most breeders highly value pedigrees and will not buy a show rabbit without them, so it is helpful if you keep them.

The important information to keep on each rabbit is its name, weight, ear number, and color.

Check with the local 4-H and FFA clubs. The fairs around here don't require or even ask for pedigres.

If it's 4-H or FFA, pedigrees are not required. But if you are looking to sell to ARBA members, pedigrees are really a must. Breeders who buy replacement stock or stock to enhance their hutches, they are looking for quality. And they want to see the lines to see what they will eventually get in their nest boxes. It's not just colors for breeders. It's got to do with all the standards of a rabbit.
