Southern by choice
Herd Master
5 month old ram lamb is scratching a lot and chewing on himself... pulling out wool. Noy really "pulling wool" out... more from the chewing. He is still in quarantine with 6/7 month old ewe lamb. She is not doing this. I don't really see signs of anything but the wool is so thick how would I even check for mites?
It is just him...not her.
I was reading it could be a fiber thing...
"It is also important to feed a quality alfalfa with a minimum 1 1/2 to 2
inches of fiber length. Feeding alfalfa pellets or ground hay does not
have the effective NDF needed for rumen health.
You may also notice wool chewing or wool pulling in lambs. The
leading cause of this activity in sheep is inadequate fiber length,
resulting in insufficient effective NDF. It is important here to note that
feeding a roughage source with 1 1/2 to 2 inches of fiber length usually
prevents wool biting, chewing or pulling. However, once a lamb
begins to pull wool, it usually will not stop. It quickly becomes a habit,
and you will need to keep the lambs covered or separated to stop this
activity."
I am feeding free choice hay and small amount of feed daily. Should I put him on alfalfa? I still think it could be some kind of mite. What could I use on him for mites?
