I used a pour on in the summer to help with relief from the flies but it was for lice and kids as well. It's called Ultra Boss, I'm sure I got it at TSC. It's permethrin. But mine are hair sheep, I'm sure you would have to make sure it makes contact with the skin much like the spot treatment flea and tick stuff for dogs. It did say "season long protection against lice". It didn't last that long for the flies though.

Lol, that should have been lice and kEds in the first sentence :).
With wool sheep, you have to part the fleece down their back in order to get the stuff directly on the skin. Or do it right after shearing.

I dug through the wool yesterday..all over. I did not get a scraping though. I do not see anything. Obviously if they are microscopic I won't without a slide, but most mites and lice can be seen. Notta. Nothing. ???? I upped the feed and put in different hay. I want to see if that helps. He is suppose to get "cut" Sat. or next so I may have him checked then.

If it is that, I am concerned the pour on may not work too well. His wool is about 3" and really thick. Isn't there an oral treatment?

Keep us posted if you get a scraping and put it under the scope. I'm anxious to see what is causing it! Whatever treatment you do, I'm gonna do, too. Although I may just see if my Southern States has that Ultra Boss stuff and try that. I just wonder why if only a couple of my sheep have the problem, why they don't all have it? Whether it's nutritional or an external parasite, wouldn't they all have been affected?

" His wool is about 3" and really thick " ... what did the seller say was his age ? I would look at his front teeth to check on his true age . A lamb ram should not have this leangth of wool. I used to run all of the sheep through a chute and had them jump into a vat containing sheep dip right after shearing to control exoparasites.

I've been following this thread, but had nothing to offer since I don't have wool sheep...plus have never dealt with lice or any external parasite. The scraping was a good idea and hope that gives you a good answer!

Well guess what??? My sheep have keds! Or whatever. I just had a lady here who was going to give me a jacob/merino sheep. Well after she saw my shedding sheep she suggested they might have lice or keds. She showed me how to check for them, and sure enough! Soshi, the really bad looking dark colored Finn sheep, had icky stuff all over her skin when we parted the wool. The lady recommended Dectomax injectable or Rotenone which is a powder. Tim was going out to Southern States earlier so I told him to get the Ultra Boss that Remuda recommended.

I have a feeling that the lice came from the Finn sheep's home. She's looked awful since we got her and she was housed with a bunch of Angora rabbits :ep I wonder if the rabbits had them. :hu

Needless to say, I don't think the lady will be sending the sheep over for her forever home! Fine by me, I have too many to begin with. And now I have too many with KEDS! :rant

Oh I got the stuff and put it on the flock of infected sheep! It was easy. It was only 1ml per 50 lbs, so I just put some in a syringe and spread the wool so I could put it on their skin. I hope it works! :fl

I'll also do my other flocks this week. :fl
