I would like to learn and read more about pigs. I was hoping that you guys could recommend some books that I could buy for my reference library.

I have some agricultural background, so I am not totally inept. I want to know more information for myself and kids. I will be posting this similar message in multiple locations based on the animals/livestock I want to know more about.

I have two hog books:

How to Raise Pigs by Philip Hasheider
This is my favorite book, mostly because of all the wonderful pictures, breed section, and the fact that he focuses mostly on pasture-raising.

Storey's Guide to Raising Pigs by Kelly Klober
This book has black and white pictures and still has a good breed section. It has more detail on how to raise the hogs so if you were to get only one book on hogs, this is the one I'd reccomend.

Both books have great sections on slaughtering and butchering a hog. The first book has more and better pictures, however, they are also more gruesome.

Thank you, doo dah. I will definitely check them out on Amazon....hopefully used and cheap.

Check with your library on all the Storey Guides - great books. That way, you can always see if it's what you are looking for before making the purchase. That's how I did it, and they are great books.

x2

and MOST local librarys will either have them or beable to get them from another library for you...its a /heck/ of a lot less expensive and I know in my town our middle school, high school, and town libraries all have complete collections of Storey Guides (we are an agricultural town with a Vocational Argriculture high school) but mostly these books don't get taken out because everyone knows someone who knows the answer they are looking for...me personally...i'm just starting to branch into pigs...and don't have anyone i know who has had them before (except my 75yr old grandfather who raised them by the dozen strictly for the freezer) and he isn't all that helpful

It all depends on what kind of pigs you want to raise & how. If you are just planning on raising confinement/penned pigs then the books recommended are great. If you are planning on raising pastured pigs then forget about 90% of everything you read in those books! Pasture raising pigs (usually heritage breeds) is a totally different entity & as far as I know there are no books out there specifically on that subject. The big grass fed/intensive grazing gurus out there like Joel Salatin & Greg Judy along with Grass Farmer Magazine etc touch on the subject a little but most of them are raising feeders so not doing any farrowing. We have a lengthy FAQ page on our website that answers a lot of questions but certainly do not know it all & neither have we written a book about it yet :)
