Durance vile is just an old saying for horrible captivity or prison. I'm not sure where it came from but my family used it a lot, mainly when children were sent to their rooms as punishment. Of course now all children have computers, TVs and video game systems in their rooms so sending them to their rooms would not be durance vile at all. LOL
