I'm flooring my small goat barn in the next week. I want to use recycled vulcanized rubber mats, but I know EVA is lighter and cheaper. What are people's opinions of the difference in urine odor retention? I also have to cut the corners of the mats to make them fit the floor shape. I have read that thee EVA mats have an impermeable exterior but a foamy cener when cut. I'm worried about the urine leaking in the cut edges and creating a permanent smell. I'm also going to purchase 2 x 2 mats. No, can't do a dirt floor, the barn is on a hill & stilted on the down slope. Going to absorb urine with straw & horse pellets.

Are you going to put the mats over concrete or wood?

The mats I chose & installed are recycled rubber (not vulcanized). They interlock tightly. They are wall-to wall over pressure treated wood. Its a paltform deck base on a hillside. The wood gets some ventilation on 3/4 of the bottom. I've has them in it a month now, with barn lime & horse pellets under straw. Seems to clean up fine.
