i have one adopted from BLM. I love her, she is very smart and a great trail horse.

A woman here in Michigan has one that she does endurance with. She regularly places though seldom wins (it's pretty hard to beat the top riders in this state). She tried a few competitive trail rides with him last year and beat me (and I'm one of the best in that division). She took him into a 3-day 75 mile ride and he completed all three days. Did I mention that he's barefoot too?

A guy in Traverse City has a gorgeous Arab/Mustang cross that looks like a refined Andalusian, big-boned but elegant with a long, flowing wavy black mane and tail. The horse also runs barefoot.

Oh, let me tell you a story... wait, you don't need to hear it then! LOL

I have worked with the BLM horses and they are fantastic. Some can be traced by bloodwork right to Spanish barbs but some are less so. Some herds over the years have had other influence, the civil war horses were turned out after the war, or so the story is told, and they mixed in with some herds of the SBs.

I really have wanted to bring a BLM home but I have to keep it in the US for a year first by their rules. So I have now 3 feral wild types from Canada here. All my horses run barefoot and do well long distance and herding cattle. And I wear the right jeans in the bush (no inside seam) or mostly riding jods.

No, no jeans.... I had done a few 5 mile ones before, LOl.... just have a bad back & neck.... Destiny went like a champ...

She is built a lot like the Spanish Barb, short , stocky, thick neck , wide chest and a lot of heart.

You must be talking about Cathy & Red Cloud II ..aka "Snoopy". They have done quite well from their stats. We also have the Dale family in the south central division also riding registered Spanish Mustangs.

This is his 20 year old sire & 2008 full brother.

Yup, that's Cathy. Linda H.'s and Becke G's horses are almost twice as tall as "Snoopy" but that little barefoot guy with clubby feet does just fine. Heck, they beat my horse who usually has a resting pulse of 8/1 in comp!

Nice looking horses. I've always liked the primitive coloring.

I had a mare pulled from the range in southwest Colorado for ten years. She died last year with a twisted gut. Her dam was actually purebred Arab (escaped from a local owner and went feral), and her sire was a Spanish Mustang. I had her registered as a Spanish Barb. She was much more alert to her surroundings than a normal 'domestic' horse--on a trail ride, she could hear a mountain biker a half mile away and would alert me to it. She would also sniff the ground a lot like a bloodhound when out on a trail, and if she smelled where a predator had been, she would not go forward anymore. She was FAST, and turned on a dime because of her short body. She was extremely intelligent, and really a good all around horse. She worked cattle, jumped, did dressage, and trail rides, and drove in harness too. They are just great horses. They can be a bit spooky when young, at least feral ones, because they are so alert and still have a lot of wild instinct. They are also a lot more sensitive I think to how you treat them--I've seen them turn on people to attack if they were hit by a whip.
