Where can I find 'special characters' to use when posting?

Not sure what you mean by special characters? You can click on the smiley face at the top of the posting box, that will make a lot of appear and you can click on them to insert them into a post.

Lots of alt codes work too, like → (alt and 26) and ♪ ♫ (alt and 13 and 14).

Or do you mean something else?

Or, if you mean special text characters, like ©, ®, ¢, or even Ѻ, ֍,ᴪ, and ° they are available in large quantities in the character map function, found in Windows Accessories.
Select the ones you need, then select 'copy' and you will use ctrl/v to insert them into your text.

I had forgot about the windows character map function. I may have to look that back up.
