For those of you who use strip cups... do you use the mesh strainer or the black tray? And why?

Just trying to decide which to order ;)

The ground works nicely, and is free!

If this is your first time around, you may want to use a strip cup just so you get to know any irregularities with the milk. But soon after you "know your goat" you'll be able to detect any off milk without the use of one.

I have a friend who just uses a dixie cup and I was thinking about trying that but wasnt sure if that was enough. This is our first so we're learning!

ok, so I understand you want to milk out the first few pulls to avoid debris getting in your milk,
but what are you actually looking for in the strip cup?

I don't use one...I strain into a bowl with a strainer in it, wipe down with baby wipes before I start and have never had a problem with debris or hair. I strain it a total of 3 times before it goes into final storage.

Strip cups are used to check for mastitis, if I recall. Heck, I just use the ground. I then look in the pail after a couple of squirts. I pasteurize my milk so no real worries there.

I got a 3 pack of perfect small stainless steel cups in the kitchen aisle at some discount place - Ross, Marshall's, like that for less than $5. I've since seen several good deals like that in restaurant supply stores and such.

I just use an old plastic cup. I check for lumpies or irregularities, color etc. and also to clear the first couple squirts of milk out as that has higher bacteria count.
