OK, I am new to all of this. How do you know how much to shave them down? What about for showing? My daughter will be showing in 4-H for the first time and we haven't shaved any of our goats yet. Perhaps we will start with the whether and use hims as a "guinea pig." A silly question..do you have to worry about sunburn on white patches?

I was new to this shaving for shows thing this year and asked similar questions not too long ago ;) Do practice on the wether first to get a feel for it. We did all of ours early enough to let the fur grow back in before the real deal so we could get some practice. We used a #10 blade, no guard, and trimmed everything down up to the jaw line and tail tip. Then we trimmed the tail so the end looked like a paint brush sort of and blended in around the jaw and face.

I used sunscreen on them for a few days, and the white one for a few days more to keep them from getting burned.

You might need to go shorter for a fair, but I did a 1/2" guard and that was perfect for my goats here at home, short enough to help get a lot of excess fur off to be cooler, but not so short that I have to worry about sunburns or anything else. I really like they way it looks too. :D

I just finished shaving the last 3 of my 9 adult goats this morning. The f'irst 2 I used an old Wahl clipper bought at Wal-Mart-----it quit working after getting those 2 done, so I got out my new Wahl and did the third goat. I hadn't washed the goats beforehand and that is probably why the clippers quit working.

Yesterday I shaved my 3 bucks-----very shaggy hair, but I washed them beforehand and the clippers didn't give out. Today, I shaved the last 3---all does and washed them also. Those $25 clippers are still going strong! But I am going to invest in some Andis clippers before I need to shave again.

Here are before and after pics. of my bucks:
