X2 what OFA said. And, colostrum is always best when it comes from an udder - not a bag from the store! Also, do it as quickly as possible as the kids ability to absorb those antibodies wanes as time goes by. Good luck!
The colostrum supplement is only a supplement, not replacement. They do make replacement colostrum but it is PRICEY and not usually on the shelf at stores. Even then, nothing better than real, fresh from mom colostrum.
She might hate it but get her milked out and give it to baby. It will be worth it.
I agree. We saved a kid who was born dead and even with drops of colostrum, in minutes you coukd see him start ti perk up and make an effort to live. By morning he was drinking and by that afternoon he was up and bounding around. Milk her out, even the most ornery does seem to stand ut out if you pull their kids.and yes, go with whole milk. If there isnt whole milk, you can mix 3% homo with liquid whipping cream and/or buttermilk. My measurements are loose but i use whipping cream or buttermilk (i like buttermilk better due to enzymes, i had better results using it this year). Using a standard sized pop bottle (like an individual would drink, i fill up to the first rim at the feet of the bottle with buttermilk and the rest with 3% (we cant get whole milk here). If you have a cow, you can just milk and serve. You can also keep milking that doe and mix in her milk with any additional cows milk to meet demands.
Thank you everyone. I Was able to get a little milk. This particular goat is crazy wild and I really planned to get her sold months ago. I don't like any that are so wild you can't work with them. It took be and my two boys holding her down, but I did get some. I split it between the two and hopefully that will get them started in life! Thanks everyone for your help!
A really easy way to restrain them is use a dog leash. Slip the back two feet into the handle of the dog leash, slide it up to their tendons just above that knee bone and then wrap that leash through the middle 3 or 4 times to cinch down and hobble the back legs -tie that off to something strong and tight or have someone hold it tight. All you need is a headgate or someone holding the head (easiest to hold it DOWN i find, especially if it has horns). Put grain or some treat she cannot resist in front of her too.
IF you can, try and get milk from her for 3 days just to get as much colostrum into them as possible.
