We are at the point where we are in a dry lot situation and it is time to figure out who is going to market next week. The last of our first born sheep is losing condition more each season so it is time for her to go. She is six years old and having more trouble each year getting back into condition. She has never been really strong on the parasite front but she was a sweety that kept her here longer than she should have been. We are going to bring all of the sheep in again tomorrow to figure out for the final time, who will be the keepers. We wanted to get our numbers down again but I have been watching about a dozen of the lambs that I'm wanting to watch grow out so I don't think our numbers will be going down. Teresa would like to get the numbers way down to make it easier on us but I am spoiled enough by my Lady that I know she will let me keep whoever I want to keep and that will be closer to 35 rather than 10. :) On the practical side, 10 would not be able to in any way control the pasture grass but a higher number would work.

Yes your sweet lady will indulge you in your madness. When you have such a fine crop of lambs, how can you let them go?

Bittersweet on the last of your firstborn. That’s one of those hard realities that must be faced and dealt with. Only 6 years old, she doesn’t have longevity in reproduction, losing condition. Another hard reality. These are the decisions that pull at your heart strings.

I have one ewe left of the original 4 bred ewes that BJ and I bought. Ewenique just had twins, she is 9 years old. One of the twins is a black ewe, keeper. I have hers and Ringo’s ewe from last year, Pinto, she went to Cooper yesterday. I also have her granddaughter, Frimplepants, also with twins, black and white ewe, keeper and the bow legged white ewe, gift to a neighbor family today. I don’t know how long Ewenique will keep producing, at some point she might just be a yard ornament. LOL

That's the hard ones, our "first loves". I have 3 aging does -- dtrs of my first here at this farm. Dairy. Prob 2 more kiddings, then retire. 🤷🥰. Still a few OLD minis. Others here won't get such passes. I'm older, too.
You might be older but you aren’t ready to be put out to pasture!

Teresa took this picture of our mistreated dogs last night and since it made me smile, I posted it here. :)
