Hmmm, my Muslim guy used the term kosher.....probably because he knew I wouldn't know halal. He said "Muslim Kosher." Is that different?
I honestly dont know much about the religion, but I think that there must be a few different sub-types of the religion because some (most) muslims here have no problem with halal meat, that is what they ask for and everything is fine. But then there are a smaller population that are very strict, and will not eat halal meat, it must be kosher

Kosher is Jewish. Perhaps that is actually what this subset is, Orthodox Jew. I understand that is a very strict sect.

a couple thoughts on how-to's...

when we dressed our pigs, we used a gun (a .22) to 'stun' them, then cut them to bleed out. however our local butcher just cuts the goat's throat and lets them bleed out- we used a similar technique to dress several lambs.

the chickens get the axe but for the turkeys we cut their throats.

i'm not sure if it has much to do with feathered vs furred and seeing them differently - i think it has to do with what is most effective. the hardest part, for us, is trying to find a way to not hurt the animal you are trying to kill... if that makes sense.

have you butchered before or have just helped? i'm asking because we've found its a different mind set to help someone... versus marching out there yourself. the good news is, yes you can do this. but dont psych yourself out.

you might want to have someone mentor you for a goat and if its not your thing - check around for your local butcher or for someone that dresses deer. you might find that you dont have, or dont want to buy, the equipment to dress a larger animal. which is fine too - we dont have the right knives, saws etc so if our buddy cant come down the local shop is really reasonable.

and dont forget you'll have a lot more 'stuff' left over than you would from dressing chickens. i had a hilarious incident known only as "revenge of the pig guts' which isnt appropriate for all the good folks who are eatin' their breakfast

I found this thread so very interesting as I am considering raising a herd of 50-100 boer meat goats and will take the next 10 months to get my "ducks" in a row. Is anyone on here raising a good size herd of meat goats? I do not want to slaughter any goats here as I can not kill an animal so I will have someone else do it.

I accidentally punctured the intestines while processing a cow once and got sprayed. :sick

eeewwwwwuuuueeee!! cow guts!!!

hee hee hee

you know.. the thing is.. you have to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing.

we generally go for respect and reverence when we process any of the animals.. but sometimes you just have to laugh.

lets just say the pig guts got me good. real. good.

but in the last laugh department - several lovely pumpkins have grown where we buried those pig guts.... that is.. after i stood there covered in them. pig gut bucket in hand. all down the front of me. and yep they were good and ripe.

in the 'good to know for next time department': make sure you are holding the pig gut bucket in such a way that the HANDLE does not obstruct the pig gut trajectory as you are hurling them into the pig gut fire. if said handle is in fact in the way of the pig gut trajectory it will cause somewhat of a boomerang effect and the hurlee will in fact be covered in super icky pig guts.

okey dokey. got it for next time.

I just saw this thread and had to throw this at you guys..

I was at a farm once and witnessed a group of folks from Africa slaughter and roast a goat.. They were friends with the farm owners and bought the goat, and the owners knew about their practice of killing on-site and so forth so it was all agreed upon in advance.

Anyway, I watched two or three guys lead this good-sized boer doe down over the hill with a BIG knife and I swear it was like they'd no more than disappeared out of sight that here they come right back, carrying her upside down by the legs. Extremely efficient.

They already had a big bonfire built and the guys simply carried the goat over to the fire and chucked her right on top of it.. Hide, hair, ears, hooves, guts -- the whole goat...in its entirety...right on the fire. No rack, no stones, no nothing....right on the fire.

She got pretty crispy and her belly swelled like you wouldn't believe, but they just kinda sat there and cut around on her legs and loin and so forth, taking bite-sized chunks off this bloated, smoldering goat as they talked and ate and laughed and seemed to have themselves a big ol' time.

Hey...if nothing else, they get points in my book for straightforwardness and practicality. :hu

I know this is kind of an old thread, but the way it is where I live, the Muslims tend to trust the Kosher prepared animals more than the Halal. It seems that some of the people that claim to prepare Halal, might not, so my Muslim friends just get it Kosher. Also, the true Halal butchers are expensive and backed up. Again, this might just be in my area, and these are my more devout Muslim friends.

I think maybe especially in places like Oklahoma it is harder to find true Halal meat. One of my best friends laughs because these kids come to her house and question her meat. She knows where their parents get their meat and she says it is not true Halal. But, they come to her house and question her food not knowing about their own. :p

Anyway, just had to throw my two cents in!

UT, can you tell us what the major Muslim holidays are and when they are celebrated? I know a lot of the markets are doing great business whenever these holidays are and I would like to coincide at least one lambing a year for these holidays.

Also, is there a Hispanic holiday during which they like to have mutton or lamb? I've heard a little about it but still don't have the 411 on when and why.

Just between you and me, I would NOT like to eat roasted goat with guts intact...... :sick
