Hey everyone,

I'm hoping to get some proven advice on this issue.

I use Toltrazuril for coccidia, whether to prevent or treat. The issue is, apparently it burns, and didn't know that until I mistakenly got some in my mouth while battling one of my goats to get the meds in her. And now i know why the goats behave the way they behave when i give them Toltrazuril.

How do I make Toltrazuril a better experience for them? Does anyone dilute it with water? or with anything else for that matter?...What does everyone do?

I never had to use that stuff....

But I know some people use a bolus gun, so the meds go into the stomach and bypass the mouth.

I used copper pills which we hid in peanut butter sandwich squares, and their Selenium, vitamin D and E, etc.. gels actually don't taste bad... so weren't too hard.

We just feed medicated grain when we need to treat for cocci. We have in the past used corid in the waterers but it is off label for anything other then cows. Toltrazuril has a 2 month withdrawal time so I would never use it. Far easier just to use the grain they willingly gobble up.

We use Corid also, but give a direct dose rather than the diluted water method. Also will use treated grain when having to deal with a group. Corid is listed for cattle and chickens... and does not have a long withdrawal. I do not like anything that has a long withdrawal if there are other options.

We treat the whole herd and I'm not drenching all the goats and sheep....nope bad enough doing it with dewormers. So either water or grain are the options lol.

Withdrawal time in milk, or meat goats? Or is it the same?

It varies based on what info you want to follow. Some says 48 days meat withdrawal, others say 42 day milk withdrawal and 150 day meat withdrawal. Since Toltrazuril(baycox) is off-label for goats there are no real withdrawal times given for goats. 48 days meat withdrawal is listed for lambs, also says not for lactacting cows being used for human consumption. So no milk withdrawal even given...just dont use it.

A complete guess by me based on what I know about dewormers for sheep vs goats would be lamb withdrawal time, times 1.35 to 2.67 which is 65 to 128 days. I wouldnt use it in milking goats where humans are drinking it. Withdrawal times for any drug are very important to pay attention too, you don't want to make people sick or invent a new disease or illness.

Honestly it is far better, easier and safer to use a medicated feed labeled for goats. Meat withdrawal time on medicated(different drug) feeds is zero. Milk withdrawal you would need to check the company but most are 1-3 days if I recall right.
