Just wondering if there are dos & don'ts?
Like chocolate for a dog.
I've not read any big no-no's for rabbits.

I gave small pieces of watermelon w/ rind today. Okay? No?

Also, am wondering why no alfalfa? Someone said too much calcium. In the goat threads I read that it was good ratio calcium/phosphorus. I've been feeding bits of it for a while now. ??

I'd be interested too, though I don't really "treat" my rabbits. Most of what the get in addition to regular food is fresh-cut grasses and clover. Not much of that now since it's been so dry.

A neighbor gave me a couple bags of cobs left when she cut the corn off for canning. The rabbits seemed to enjoy them best. (I was afraid of some of the others -- like goats -- choking). But the rabbits ate the corn bits (very little left) and have fun gnawing down the cobs and tossing them around. They all have small tree branch pieces in their cages too, to gnaw on.

I usually feed leftover veggies and scraps to the chickens and goats. I'd be interested to know what and how much the rabbits can have. Didn't want to throw off their nutritional balances and they eat so little that seems easily possible.

I feed an alfalfa hay and have had no problems. I am not sure why people say not to give it.
When I give a treat it may be a small bit of carrot tops, a small slice of apple to keep mom busy why I check her kits. I have given a small amount of carrot and some dandilions if they seem to not be happy or feel bad. The breeder of my trio swears by dandilions to help make them feel better if a bit under the weather. (I do not know) But have given it to them.
I do not give young rabbits treats of any kind except for the bit of alfalfa hay they get while mom is eating hers. And once weaned I keep them on it. My rabbits get a daily portion of pellets, and then a small portion of hay daily. It seems to work out just fine. I also give them apple, cherry or pear tree twigs or chunks to keep their teeth trimmed up and give them something to do.
This is just what I do and it seems to work fine with my group.
I know the breeder only gave his rabbits hay once a week not every day like I do.

The lady w/4 dogs, 4 city chickens, 4 meat rabbits, their kits, a lizard and a rescued kitty who will have a new home in 2 weeks.... Yeah!

Alfalfa hay is good for babies but have too much protein for adult rabbits.

Do not feed corn kernals because rabbits cannot digest it and may end up with GI blockage and die. The rest of the corn is probably OK but I'd be careful.

Cherry twigs may cause problems. I'd stick with apple or pear twigs.

My rabbits favorites are pellets. They at times ignore my treats but never ignore pellets unless weather's too hot to eat.

I bake my own whole wheat bread. When I get down to the crust I let it get good and hard, then toss it in the bunrab cage. They love to gnaw on it and it gives them some grain feed also.

Be careful with feeding grain (bread, biscuit) if you are not feeding hay. Alfalfa hay is fine, assuming you have reproducing, or meat rabbits.

My rabbits love APPLES - they each get one-a-day when I get windfalls. I feed kitchen scraps except orange peals and onion. I feed garden leftovers except green parts of potatoes and tomatoes. They LOVE green beans. When we're done picking, I pull them up by the roots and feed 1 plant per rabbit per day. They love the beans. Peas that weren't picked soon enough too.
Apple twigs, raspberry leaves and vines, plaintain, dandelion...

They also love yogurt-covered raisins, and little vanilla dog biscuits.

I make my rabbits a mixture of food. I feed them
Lettuce
Apples
Salory
Corrotts
Bannas
Water Melon
And even bread, I leave the bread outside for a day so it can harden up and the rabbits go crazy for it. I chop then mix all the stuff up in one bowl and they love it!!!
