Exploring the pasture
I have a 2 1/2 week old Nigerian Dwarf buckling that seems to be in some serious pain, and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I can call the vet tomorrow, but I want to know if there's something I can do for him in the mean time.
He was disbudded yesterday and I'm scared it has something to do with that. The people who did it are great! They've disbudded all of our kids, they've been doing it for 30 years, disbud about 300 goats a year, and the local vet actually refers people to them. He was fine yesterday after the disbudding, his normal self, jumping up on me, running around, nursing fine. But today when I went out he was standing in the corner shaking. I thought he was cold at first but then he started screaming! He'll stand and shake, then just jump up and start crying out of nowhere. Then at other times it'll look like he's ok trying to nurse or nibble on things. But he just looks aweful I checked him for injuries, can't find any. He doesn't cry when I pick him up. He did cry when I touched the top of his head, but his head/eyes aren't swollen at all. Any ideas?
Two other things. The shaking didn't catch my eye right away because it's been pretty cold here this week and the kids have been shivering a little if they stay outside too long. I'm not sure if severe cold could have anything to do with it? I did hang a heat lamp in there finally, but today has been much warmer than the rest of the week has been.
Also, these kids have not had their Bo-se yet. I just picked the bottle up from the vets, and was out of syringes so I was waiting for the box I just ordered to get here. When they were first born I suspected that they were in need of it. It took them longer than normal to walk right, some of them were walking on their fronts of their feet, if that makes any sense? The bottom of their hoofs were pointing up. My vet insisted that Bo-se wasn't what they needed but I got him to give me a bottle anyway. And in a few days they were all walking fine. Just yesterday, a couple started limping or not putting weight on one leg. One of them that did that had just been disbudded as well, and of course that was my first thought. But the other one we actually forgot to disbud (got home and realized she had a nice shaved head but wasn't done And both of them were walking fine later. I know the shaking and screaming are probably not from a Selenium deficiency. But do you think the limping could be from cold or they need Selenium? I'll be going to the feed store for syringes tomorrow morning, and will give them all Bo-se anyway.
