I have a 2 1/2 week old Nigerian Dwarf buckling that seems to be in some serious pain, and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I can call the vet tomorrow, but I want to know if there's something I can do for him in the mean time.

He was disbudded yesterday and I'm scared it has something to do with that. The people who did it are great! They've disbudded all of our kids, they've been doing it for 30 years, disbud about 300 goats a year, and the local vet actually refers people to them. He was fine yesterday after the disbudding, his normal self, jumping up on me, running around, nursing fine. But today when I went out he was standing in the corner shaking. I thought he was cold at first but then he started screaming! He'll stand and shake, then just jump up and start crying out of nowhere. Then at other times it'll look like he's ok trying to nurse or nibble on things. But he just looks aweful :( I checked him for injuries, can't find any. He doesn't cry when I pick him up. He did cry when I touched the top of his head, but his head/eyes aren't swollen at all. Any ideas?

Two other things. The shaking didn't catch my eye right away because it's been pretty cold here this week and the kids have been shivering a little if they stay outside too long. I'm not sure if severe cold could have anything to do with it? I did hang a heat lamp in there finally, but today has been much warmer than the rest of the week has been.

Also, these kids have not had their Bo-se yet. I just picked the bottle up from the vets, and was out of syringes so I was waiting for the box I just ordered to get here. When they were first born I suspected that they were in need of it. It took them longer than normal to walk right, some of them were walking on their fronts of their feet, if that makes any sense? The bottom of their hoofs were pointing up. My vet insisted that Bo-se wasn't what they needed but I got him to give me a bottle anyway. And in a few days they were all walking fine. Just yesterday, a couple started limping or not putting weight on one leg. One of them that did that had just been disbudded as well, and of course that was my first thought. But the other one we actually forgot to disbud (got home and realized she had a nice shaved head but wasn't done :) And both of them were walking fine later. I know the shaking and screaming are probably not from a Selenium deficiency. But do you think the limping could be from cold or they need Selenium? I'll be going to the feed store for syringes tomorrow morning, and will give them all Bo-se anyway.

I would take a temp and see if his temp is low...or high running fever??? If you have some lanacaine..sun burn spray...I would spray some on his wounds. That maybe bothering him.

If he's eating, drinking and pooping normally?? Then its hard to say what wrong with him??

You may want to give him some baking soda and molasses just for preventative purposes..in case his belly is bothering him??

But take his temp..keep him warm...and spray some lanacaine on him for burn relief. He could be in pain from stings he's feeling from the disbudding?? Thats why its off and on behavoir??

Again its hard to say whats going on with him??? Sorry..Hope it helps a little. :idunno

I'm sorry...I'm coming up empty, this isn't ringing any bells.
Hope he's feeling better soon.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did some research on White Muscle Disease. I read that often symptoms pop up in older kids after over exerting themselves or stress (maybe like piling in a crate and getting disbudded :/) When I just went out to check on them a few others were shaking even though they were piled up under the heat lamp, and it is not that cold out there at all. Two of my does had quads the same day, so there's a pile of eight out there. They feel nice and warm, but I will take temps. I was reading that their legs can start to hurt so much they tremble while standing. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you think there is a possibility that the one buck is shaking/crying from the muscle pain? I will get Bo-Se in them as soon as I can tomorrow after I pick up some more needles. But is there anything else I should do for them if this is a Selenium deficiency?

I haven't ever seen that with selenium deficient kids. Not ringing any bells here either...but I would give a teeny dose of Banamine - I suspect he might have a little brain swelling from the disbudding for some reason. Banamine will help with inflammation and pain.

That's what I was worried about. I don't have any Banamine. Is there anything else that would help with inflammation until I can get ahold of the vet?

You could try ibuprofen (children's liquid) at 2x the human dose.
(If a human kid weighing 20# gets 1stp, a goat weighing the same would get 2 tsp).

I wouldn't give more than 2 doses to a kid that young...maybe tonight, then see how he's acting in the morning...if he's better, don't give him any more.

Thanks so much! I'll give that to him right away. Is that still 2x the dose with a little Nigerian Dwarf kid?
