Check with your local 4-H as they may have a preference based on their program: show or meat pen. How old is the child? If your child is young or small, and if it is ok with the 4-H leader then you may want to look at a smaller breed, like Florida White which is smaller compared to a California or New Zealand.

If the 4-H program is for meat pens, then you more than likely would be looking at a nice Cali/NZ cross.

Go visit the breeder you buy your animal(s) from and ask them absolutely ANY question that crosses your mind regarding the rabbit. A good breeder who is interested in getting others interested will take the time to answer and explain anything you ask.

All of my rabbits have been handled by me from day 1. As they say in the good book, they know the sound of my voice... also the touch of my hand. Teach your child to be very involved with the animal. Stroke its fur, scratch its nose, talk to it, then stand back and watch your child's face light up when the rabbit eagerly comes to the front of the cage because it is expecting something nice. Big smile! Oh, and they love to be brushed which helps with their summer shedding.

Consistency is the key to dealing with any animal.

I think getting children involved with animals as early as you can is a fabulous thing to do with and for your child. Bravo!

Animalmom, what kind of brush do you use for your rabbits?

The brushes I use are just animal brushes, more cat size than dog size, whichever would fit better in your hand. You would be surprised how much rabbit fur the brush picks up. Then you can use an old comb and rake out the fur and bag it for the winter when a doe may need a little help lining her nest.
