I have 3 pigs---1 boar and 2 sows. The sows are pregnant---due in the next couple weeks. I wormed all 3 with Wazine like I did last year, but a couple days later noticed really bad "dandruff" and flakes of dry mud or skin on the pigs. The boar seems the worst-----and he loves it if I scratch and scratch and scratch his back.

I started thinking they have mange mites. I bought a bottle of ivomec injectable planning on giving it orally, but since I just gave them the wazine should I wait 14 days and then treat with the ivomec? I hate to wait and let them suffer longer (plus the piglets may come before that and then they'll have to be treated). I already opened the box the ivomec came in, so I can't take it back and get pour on.

The other thought I had was to dust them with seven----but one sow is almost impossible to get close to.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm....

Why not try some DE (Diatemaceous Earth) first. Let them "bathe" in that. If they have mites that will help. Must be food grade though, not the stuff you would put in your swimming pool! You could also buy some vegetable oil & pour it on them. This will not only condition their skin they will also lick it off each other, getting rid of the mites if they have them.

I would not use any more chemicals until I knew for sure what they had.

Thank you----where do you get the food grade DE? Would they have it at TSC?

Hmm.. not sure where you are. We cannot get it locally here. We get ours from Azure Standard.

I'm in Indiana. Is Azure Standard a feed store or something online? I may just try the oil-----I looked the pigs over yesterday, and now I'm thinking it is just dry skin from the winter. Would mineral oil work? They are in separate pens right now so they wouldn't be able to lick the oil off each other----not sure if mineral oil would hurt them anyway.......

Azure Standard is a company out of Oregon that trucks organic produce all over the western & mid western parts of the state. I don't think they are as far as Indiana yet.

Whatever oil you use it needs to be food grade as the pigs will ingest it. If it is just dry skin then some oil might really help them. ALSO if you provide them with a good sized mud wallow that will protect them from getting sunburnt & will also help their skin.

I do have a pool in each pen, and also they have plenty of mud and shade. Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it! I will try putting some oil on them first and see how they do. Then if I need to, I will get some DE.

Dunno where in IN you are, but the Marion TSC carries DE, so I'm pretty sure they all (in IN, anyway) do. We all get our stock from the same distribution centers.
