Stupid question for the day... ...do llamas get sheared? That wonderful coat just looks so hot, I'm curious...

Yes, they do need to be sheared. I need to have my females done, but I'm having a terrible time trying to find someone to do it.

Okay, thanks! I say go purchase a good set of clippers and go for it! Can't be any different than a dog, horse or goat...and would save you $$ in the long run. My friend here with alpacas was trying to find someone to do it for her and I believe they wanted like $200 a head to do so! eeps That's a set of clippers.

What state are you in? If you are in Ohio or Michigan close to the border of Ohio, I know a great llama shearer.

Someone was actually charging $200 per alpaca to shear? Geez, I thought $45 a head was expensive. My alpaca shearer charges $25 per head. My llama shearer charges $20 for a barrel cut and $35 for a full cut.

If you have a chute or some way to safely contain them, then you should be able to shear them yourself. To have them just standing out in the open, you probably won't be able to shear them unless they are VERY docile llamas that are putty in your hands anyway.

I shear my crias but admittedly have a professional come and shear the adults. The pro just goes so much quicker than I can and they look much better.
