When it comes to what we (Honaker Farm) have the vet out for it is basically just emergencies. We take fecal samples to the vet, we get meds from their office and the like.
You can give shots (except rabies vaccinations) yourself and draw blood and even do your own fecal if you like. I agree in that the more you can do yourself the better off you are.
